Webinar on Federal Charter School Program Changes:
New Support for State Efforts to Strengthen Authorizing
Thursday, July 21, 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, MDT

CACSA, in partnership with NACSA and the NN4DA, is hosting a national webinar to discuss the implications for states of the revised federal Charter School Program (CSP) rules. The Biden Administration recently released final rules related to the Federal CSP. Now that the dust has settled, the final rules provide opportunities and obligations for people working in their states who are interested in strengthening charter school authorizing. In the long-run, these could affect charter-district relationships. States applying for new CSP grants under the State Entity (SE) program are now required to explain activities they have conducted to improve charter school authorizing. According to the new rules, “an applicant must demonstrate that the State entity has taken steps to ensure that all authorized public chartering agencies implement best practices for charter school authorizing.” If funded, they must also invest a portion of their grant into activities that strengthen charter school authorizing.

CACSA Webinar on Preparing Annual Reports
Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022; 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm, MDT

CACSA is hosting a webinar to discuss why and how to provide annual reports to charter schools. Under Colorado’s charter school law, districts are required to provide an annual report to every charter school they oversee. Annual reports should detail the progress each school is making toward meeting the terms of its charter contract. Survey data from Colorado authorizers has shown a considerable proportion of districts do not provide these annual reports. Failing to provide annual reports can undermine a district’s ability to intervene if a school runs into trouble. Annual reports also help build a body of evidence that can help a district act when they need to non-renew a long-struggling charter school. Providing annual reports can also improve district/charter relationships and give successful charter schools important feedback to either focus on improvements or avoid anyone worrying unnecessarily about their status. CACSA has created model annual report templates designed to help districts easily implement an annual report process.

Experienced Colorado authorizers will share their experience with annual reports at a CACSA Webinar on the topic. Anyone is welcome to join the call; and districts that currently do not implement an annual report are strongly encouraged to attend.
