CACSA Update 9/29/21

CACSA Authorizer Bootcamp Kicks off in November

CACSA is pleased to announce the 2021 CACSA Authorizer Bootcamp. The bootcamp is designed for people new to the work of authorizing or those wanting a comprehensive review covering the full range of tasks that authorizing staff perform. The bootcamp covers the details of state policy and incorporates an array of best practices and model tools that authorizers can apply in their district. The bootcamp materials were produced in partnership with WestED. Participants will meet for two hours each Wednesday, over six weeks, starting on November 1 (with a break for the week of Thanksgiving). CACSA’s federal grant allows us to put this on at no cost to participants. We are also recruiting experienced authorizers to participate throughout the bootcamp as mentors on various topics. If you or someone from your team is interested in joining, or if you would like to participate as a mentor, please contact Alex Medler directly.

Charter Renewal Work Group Starts in October

CACSA is convening a working group of districts interested in updating their approach to charter renewal. Participants will explore the recently-released CACSA Charter School Renewal Package. The group will meet weekly and use a consultancy approach to address a series of challenges that districts face while renewing charter schools. The group will also learn from peers facing renewal decisions about their approach to accountability during the COVID-19 pandemic recovery. Possible topics include how and when to add new components to board policy, how to consider low enrollment, the role of DACs and how to train DACs and district staff on the renewal process, and how to consider education programming changes that may be prompted by the pandemic. The work group is open to any authorizing staff and will start in late October. If you are interested in joining the work group, contact Alex Medler directly.

CACSA Monthly Authorizer-Only Call And Seminar on “Indicators of Distress”

The next CACSA monthly authorizer-only call is scheduled for October 20, from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm. In addition to our regular peer-to-peer sharing and an update on CACSA developments, this month we will have a seminar on Indicators of Distress. The National Charter School Resource Center (NCSRC) has been developing materials that help authorizers identify charter schools in trouble as their quality begins to decline. These materials were developed by the NCSRC and WestED. You can download studies, tools, and view a series of webinars online about this project. Authorizers in our partner organizations at FACSA have found the materials highly useful to their work. You can learn more about this project and download materials related to this seminar here.
